Children & Adolescent Counselling in Singapore

Growing up can come with emotional, social and behavioural challenges that may be difficult for children and teenagers to understand or express.

Children and adolescent counselling provides a safe, supportive and age-appropriate space for young people to explore their thoughts and feelings, develop healthy coping skills and navigate challenges with the guidance of a mental health professional. Our counselling services for children and adolescents in Singapore are tailored to each young person’s age, needs and circumstances. Where appropriate, parents and caregivers may also be involved to support progress beyond the counselling session.

When Might a Child or Teenager Benefit From Counselling?

Every child responds differently to challenges. Sometimes changes in mood, behaviour, relationships or school life may indicate that they could benefit from additional emotional support.

Children and teenagers may seek counselling for concerns such as:

  • Anxiety, excessive worrying or fears
  • Stress and difficulty coping with pressure
  • Low mood, sadness or emotional difficulties
  • Low self-esteem or lack of confidence
  • Anger, frustration or difficulty managing emotions
  • School-related stress or academic pressure
  • Friendship, peer or relationship difficulties
  • Bullying or social challenges
  • Family changes, separation or divorce
  • Grief, loss or major life transitions
  • Behavioural or emotional changes
  • Difficulty adjusting to a new school or environment
  • Identity and self-discovery
  • Communication difficulties within the family

Counselling does not require a child or teenager to be experiencing a crisis. It can also provide a supportive environment for young people who are finding a particular stage of life difficult or who would benefit from developing stronger emotional and coping skills.

Our Therapeutic Approaches

Our clinicians draw from a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches depending on your needs, including:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Helps identify and change unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Supports psychological flexibility and helps you take meaningful action aligned with your values.

Play-Based Therapy

For younger children who may find it difficult to express their feelings through words.

Family and Parent-Involved Approaches

Where appropriate, to better understand family dynamics, strengthen communication and support the child or teenager outside of therapy.

How Does Children and Adolescent Counselling Work?

Counselling for children and teenagers is adapted according to their developmental stage, personality and individual needs.

For younger children, communicating emotions may not always come naturally through conversation alone. Sessions may therefore incorporate age-appropriate approaches that help children express themselves and engage comfortably.

With adolescents and teenagers, counselling may involve more direct conversations around their experiences, emotions, relationships, school pressures and concerns.

The aim is to create a non-judgemental environment where young people can feel heard and supported while developing a better understanding of themselves and healthier ways of managing challenges.

Supporting Parents and Caregivers

A child’s emotional wellbeing does not exist in isolation. Parents and caregivers can play an important role in supporting their child outside of counselling.

Where appropriate, the counsellor or therapist may work with parents or caregivers to better understand the young person’s needs and discuss ways to provide support at home.

The level of parental involvement will depend on factors such as the child’s age, circumstances and therapeutic needs, while respecting appropriate boundaries and confidentiality.

FAQ

The journey begins with transparency. We have gathered the most common inquiries regarding our philosophy and operational standards.

Psychological therapy – often also called talk therapy, counselling, or psychotherapy – is a structured, evidence-based process guided by a trained counsellor, psychologist, or psychiatrist.  It focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts, emotions, and behaviours to improve daily functioning and mental well-being.

Therapy can help to address any life challenge regardless of scale.  It is equally effective for navigating everyday stressors as it is for treating severe conditions like trauma, grief, anxiety, mood difficulties, or a general inability to cope and function in life.

Counsellors are trained to help navigate everyday stressors, relationship challenges, and life transitions through talk therapy.

Psychologists provide therapy but are also trained to administer psychological assessments and diagnose a broad range of clinical mental health conditions.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health.  They diagnose and treat complex conditions and can prescribe and manage medication alongside talk therapy.

Rates are tiered based on the professional designation and years of experience of the practioner.  Every clinician at Mind Concierge has a minimum of 5 years of clinical practice, while senior clinicians have 10 or more years of experience.  View our full price list here.

We offer 60-minute and 90-minute sessions for talk therapy.  For couples, families, or groups, a 90-minute session is highly recommended for the initial consultation to allow sufficient time for a comprehensive intake.

We offer both options.  You can choose to meet in-person at our clinic (hyperlink address) or attend the session online.  You will be able to select your preference during booking.

Selecting a therapist online can feel challenging when you have never met them before.  To find the right fit, we recommend focusing on two key factors:

  • Therapeutic style and alignment: Think about how you communicate best.  A strong clinical relationship requires a sense of safety and mutual fit.  If you prefer a gentle, reflective pace, select a clinician who is patient and exploratory in their approach.  If you are goal-driven, choose a therapist who is direct and solution-oriented.
  • Clinical specialisation: while all our practitioners are trained to treat general mental health challenges, they each have their own distinct interest and clinical focus.  Review our team’s profiles and find a practitioner whose specialized expertise aligns you’re your specific needs, whether that is mood disorders, anxiety, stress management, relationship conflict, etc.

If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed or unsure after browsing, please know that is completely normal and ok.  Contact our team directly and we will personally match you with a suitable therapist.

Maintaining your privacy is a top priority.  We comply fully and strictly to the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) of Singapore and adhere to international healthcare privacy standards, including HIPAA compliance.  All client records, case notes, and communications are managed through secure, clinical platforms.  Our team is bound by legal and ethical confidentiality agreements, ensuring your personal and clinical information remains confidential and protected.

Because every individual and situation is unique, there is no fixed timeline.  Some research indicates it typically takes a minimum of 8 continuous sessions to effectively build new habits, but it really depends.

It is highly recommended that both partners attend the first intake session.  This is crucial for establishing shared goals and gathering a balanced perspective on the relationship.  Once a collaborative framework is set, your therapist will design a treatment plan.  Depending on your needs, this may or may not include individual sessions for each partner.
